A bicycling, birding day out…

On November 26, 2021 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

The first real frost of this winter was blown into the North West overnight, waking up to a cold bedroom was not the most pleasant way to start the day, windows frosted up, the caravan chilled through, the steam from the kettle condensing all over the kitchen... This will be the last week on the …

Glad to have mudguards on French Fender Day…

On October 17, 2021 By grassupthemiddle2 Comments

A tradition of some years now... J. P Weigle, rider, constructeur, father and host of French Fender Day, has for the past few years done a virtual FFD. Previously it was a real life meeting of like minded friends over in the USA. Clearly as much we’d love to go along and join in the …

Annual gathering…

On September 11, 2021 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

Its 640am on Saturday morning and I’m nervous and excited in equal measures, the sky is getting lighter by the minute and the train is approaching, I push my bike on board and strap it in, there's no one else in the carriage but I still wear my mask. I’m heading to North Wales to …

Three out of five ain’t bad…

On August 30, 2021 By grassupthemiddleLeave a comment

The Peak Audax Wednesday Marple grimpeur series features five rides around thePeak District. At 100km each, these sit on the shorter side of all things audax. Don’t let that fool you though. Each ride carries at least two AAA points, signifying a minimum of 2000m climbing. This year I hoped to ride the full series, …

A perfect evening…

On August 28, 2021 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

Once again the stars aligned. A perfect combination of weather, bikes and people. The chippy run happened! A late August bout of dry weather saw our local Cheshire lanes drying out and turning to dust, this always has me reaching for the allen keys, twitching to remove those seven bolts that free the bike from …

Mid Winter Alpine Gravel Adventure 2021…

On August 21, 2021 By grassupthemiddleLeave a comment

This particular trip had been on my mind for a few years on and off. As with most of my trips it all started with a late night session pouring over a NZ Topo50 Map (think Ordnance Survey Maps) These days this is very much a digital exploration, with paper maps primarily saved for getting beta on some …

Six miles of absolute bliss…

On August 12, 2021 By grassupthemiddleLeave a comment

The last weeks weather has hardly been inspiring, the near torrential rain has the effect of flushing any enthusiasm right down the drain, both literally and metaphorically in my case. I’m now very firmly in the fair weather camp despite owning enough rain jackets to stock a small shop, there was a time when the …

In praise of the Leano…

On July 1, 2021 By grassupthemiddle3 Comments

Leano, a noun, a name, sunshine, sunlight, a line of cocaine, and/or gods plan... Or in our case a leano is a thing that you lean your bike on, then proceed to take a photograph of your bike against your chosen leano, a good leano has a magnetic attraction, you spot them out of your …

Finally…

On May 30, 2021May 30, 2021 By grassupthemiddle4 Comments

We’ve been able to get out to the coast. I’ve been at the caravan for a week now and am very relieved to see that nothing has changed, it still rains like buggery, the wind has a mind of its own and the sea still keeps toing and froing twice a day. With an eye …

Completely inappropriate…

On May 9, 2021May 9, 2021 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

Bikes that is! Sunday. The brief... Incorporate Clayton Vale MTB trails into an extended urban exploration loop. Once there, the general idea would be to partake in a spot of underbiking, just for the hell of it! 2 Steve's, an Andy, a Jack, one Graham and myself (Paul) set off nice and early, eager to …

The Sunday Service will be an extension of last weeks ride, exploring around Lindow Moss and through back lanes to Knutsford, home through Tatton Park, a bit further this week, around about forty miles, meeting at the bench on the canal at Stretford at 8am, all very welcome, socialable pace, bring snacks After last Sundays fail we’ll try again, visiting Lindow Common looking for new tracks and trails, meeting at 8am at the benches on the canal at Stretford, everyone welcome to join, bring snacks and smiles, sociable pace around about thirty miles There's a new post up on the blog! The Boss is obviously in a nostalgic mood this afternoon 🤗 Come Sunday and we’ll be out exploring, heading out towards Lindow Common looking out for new tracks to explore, we’ll be meeting at the benches on the canal at Stretford at 8am to beat the crowds, everyone welcome to join, bring a flask and some grub, pace as always will be sociable, maybe thirty miles at most Not only has spring arrived but it feels as though summer is hurrying up close behind, experience tells us not to take the mudguards off just yet though 😉 Our new patches and stickers as designed by @illustratemybike have been flying out around the world for the last month or so, we told Frances that we’d try to find out where they’ve been once they’ve been stuck or sawn somewhere appropriate, if you are proudly sporting a Grassupthemiddle patch or sticker we’d love it if you could write a few words about where you’ve been together, photos would be good also, if you feel inclined to do so please use the DM facility to get in touch and we’ll gladly collate them together 😊 Sunday... On Sunday we’ll be heading out to the Cheshire lanes, meeting at the Riverbank Cafe at 830 then out across the moss towards a GUTM classic affectionatly known as Ole Pointless, all welcome, bring a flask and a smile, the ride will be about thirty flat miles and at a socialable pace The next Sunday Service will be a short ride out towards Lymm, meeting at 8am at the Riverbank Cafe and then across Carrington Moss towards the TPT, we’ll spend half an hour or so at the bench putting the world to rights and then retrace our steps back home, about twenty easy chilled out miles, all very welcome, bring a brew and a smile
