An unexpected treat…

On July 26, 2022 By grassupthemiddle2 Comments

I’ve been back on the coast for a while now, post Covid recovery somewhat hampering the miles but nonetheless enjoying the summertime. Its always a busy time around here, but just now the roads are full of tractors towing freshly cut grass, I think the farmers have already gathered their third cut this year. Meeting …

A bicycling, birding day out…

On November 26, 2021 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

The first real frost of this winter was blown into the North West overnight, waking up to a cold bedroom was not the most pleasant way to start the day, windows frosted up, the caravan chilled through, the steam from the kettle condensing all over the kitchen... This will be the last week on the …

In praise of the Leano…

Leano, a noun, a name, sunshine, sunlight, a line of cocaine, and/or gods plan... Or in our case a leano is a thing that you lean your bike on, then proceed to take a photograph of your bike against your chosen leano, a good leano has a magnetic attraction, you spot them out of your …

Sub twenty four hour overnighter (S24O)

On May 19, 2019 By grassupthemiddle3 Comments

It’s been over a year since I last slept under the stars and I had an overwhelming desire to get back to it, the fact that the weather forecast was looking amazing helped. So I packed light, then repacked even lighter, just a bivvy bag, a sleeping mat, a pillow and a quilt, spare socks …

October…

On October 31, 2018 By grassupthemiddle7 Comments

I’ve just spent the last month (more or less) riding bikes along the coastal roads of North West England. There’s a number of reasons for doing this, the main one being that this is an area that I’ve come to love over the last twenty five years of staying here ( in fact it seriously …

Tom’s first Chorley cake…

On September 3, 2018September 3, 2018 By grassupthemiddleLeave a comment

Tom and I drove over to Lancaster yesterday! Steve is out that way for a week or so, and as it's only an hour up the motorway from home, it would've been rude not too... The aim was to meet Steve at Glasson Dock (a gentle 30 min ride from base camp for him) in …

Something to aspire to…

On November 1, 2016 By grassupthemiddleLeave a comment

Occasionally I find myself trying, pushing hard on the pedals, looking at the speedo, breathing deeply ... it creeps up on me until something in my brain switches and I realise what I'm doing! And then I stop and get back to just enjoying riding along. Some background information here... I stopped racing bikes about …

Map gazing…

On October 25, 2016 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

Sunday night, if ever there was a night to avoid the telly its got to be Sunday, and as is my way I am listening to music and staring at maps. Maps that are kept at the caravan and are specific to this area. These maps have green covers and were known as pathfinders, and …

The day after the storm…

On October 19, 2016October 19, 2016 By grassupthemiddle2 Comments

Yesterday was horrible, rain, hailstones, sleet and wind, wind that was strong enough to have the caravan rocking... Today's forecast said that it was going to be amazing! Woken by the geese to cool crisp blue skies, the forecast was correct and the day looked promising, the only downside was that the tides were against …

North West Coast 2016…

On October 9, 2016 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

Day 4, the finale! The last cycling day of our Lancashire week.  A plan to penetrate the Yorkshire Dales (a favourite area of mine, too rarely visited since moving away from North East England) has been sitting in bold on our unwritten agenda and we retired the previous evening with hope, ambition and fully charged …

Our #gutmspringforward23 bivvy weekend has just taken place, there was a good turnout and the weather was mostly kind, unfortunately I managed to pick up yet another chest infection so couldn’t make it so I’ll be intrigued to read about it in a forthcoming blog post coming soon There’s a new post up on the blog, some excellent writing and snapping about some fun winter riding from our pal @singlespeedsimon Bicycle rides are always enhanced by either a train or boat journey somewhere along the way, boats are best but trains run a close second twenty five miles into 25mph headwinds equals a beer on a bench with a sea view @farmyardbrewco ground conditions wet, forecast wet, bring mudguards Last reminder that if you are coming along to the #GUTMspringforward23 bivvy please let us know so we can book dinner for the evening, we’ll be eating at a country pub that gets busy on a Saturday night The forecast is looking good for this coming Sunday, so it maybe a good day for a fully loaded shakedown ride in preparation for the #GUTMspringforward23 bivvy ? Meeting at 830am @Riverbankcoffee for a ride out to Rostherne Church across the cheshire tundra, a sociable thirty miles or so, all welcome #GUTMspringforward23 bivvy details, meeting at the Riverbank Cafe at 1030 and riding by 11ish, sociable pace and mostly flat until the last pull up to the bivvy spot, dinner at a pub, amazing night under the stars, early morning artisinal coffe, ride home fully satisfied The next Sunday Service will be decided on the day due to the weather forecast, it looks like heavy rain so if we do ride it’ll be into the city for an urban exploration, meeting at 8am at Riverbank for coffee
