The Old Ghost Road…

On November 6, 2022 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

It's been some time since last putting pixels down on my screen for the GUTM Blog...Prompted by a recent correspondence and 'Lay of The Land' conversation with Steve M which coincided nicely with a recent ride adventure. Well timed! A planned ride to the Old Ghost Road late Winter had been planned with my riding …

Windy Welly…

On February 5, 2022 By grassupthemiddle2 Comments

Its been almost two years, and I can finally look back and laugh... A long dreamt of ride around the bottom of the north island of New Zealand, I’d been putting it off for a few years, for reasons rather than excuses, however there was something looming over the horizon that gave a sense of …

Mid Winter Alpine Gravel Adventure 2021…

This particular trip had been on my mind for a few years on and off. As with most of my trips it all started with a late night session pouring over a NZ Topo50 Map (think Ordnance Survey Maps) These days this is very much a digital exploration, with paper maps primarily saved for getting beta on some …

Swapping an E out for an A…

Paddling Not Pedalling... After a recent post of mine on Instagram, Steve Makin asked if I'd write an account of last week's 'Ocean Adventure Camp' overnighter. Parking the cycle's up for a few days, Wifey & I opted to take the days between our Labour weekend and (our district) Marlborough Anniversary Day off for some …

Lockdown meanderings…

An enforced holiday in the first half of 2020 was an unexpected event, I had not planned for this... I had planned for Tour Divide in June. Like massive amounts of people around the world it was time to adjust, reflect and become creative. I never ever get bored normally and I definitely did not …

TOUR AOTEAROA 2020…

On May 8, 2020May 8, 2020 By grassupthemiddle2 Comments

Here I am again up at the very northern tip of Aotearoa , Cape Reinga  lining up for my third time for this increasingly popular brevet. I am super amped and looking forward to riding through this stunning country I now call home . I was starting in wave one this year, in 2016 I …

World of chairs…

Saturday morning's arrival was a little painful after the previous nights send off for a work colleague... A little more decimated by the Behemoth Brewing Company than I had factored in for today's ride, planned a couple days previously. Not really feeling the Mojo for a 140km ride, I settle for an abridged version which …

In search of colours…

On May 2, 2018 By grassupthemiddleLeave a comment

The rain stopped, the sun came out, I went down to the cellar. The Singular Swift came up the stairs blinking into the light, its been down in the dark for over four months now, I pumped up the tyres and oiled the chain and everything was all okay again. I had nowhere to go …

The Boss is back! It's great to see him again, fresh from another trip to New Zealand and full of stories to tell. Welcoming him back to the fold this morning... Myself, Tom and Neil met at the usual spot by the canal and got a nice surprise as we were able to meet Steve's …

Finally getting to the Wild Coast Trail…

On April 5, 2018April 5, 2018 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

The weather has been fine of late but windy as hell, my riding enthusiasm low, my digestive system in turmoil, to say that I couldn’t be arsed to ride is an understatement. The New Zealand trip is coming to an end soon and once again events had conspired against me with regard to heading out …

Our #gutmspringforward23 bivvy weekend has just taken place, there was a good turnout and the weather was mostly kind, unfortunately I managed to pick up yet another chest infection so couldn’t make it so I’ll be intrigued to read about it in a forthcoming blog post coming soon There’s a new post up on the blog, some excellent writing and snapping about some fun winter riding from our pal @singlespeedsimon Bicycle rides are always enhanced by either a train or boat journey somewhere along the way, boats are best but trains run a close second twenty five miles into 25mph headwinds equals a beer on a bench with a sea view @farmyardbrewco ground conditions wet, forecast wet, bring mudguards Last reminder that if you are coming along to the #GUTMspringforward23 bivvy please let us know so we can book dinner for the evening, we’ll be eating at a country pub that gets busy on a Saturday night The forecast is looking good for this coming Sunday, so it maybe a good day for a fully loaded shakedown ride in preparation for the #GUTMspringforward23 bivvy ? Meeting at 830am @Riverbankcoffee for a ride out to Rostherne Church across the cheshire tundra, a sociable thirty miles or so, all welcome #GUTMspringforward23 bivvy details, meeting at the Riverbank Cafe at 1030 and riding by 11ish, sociable pace and mostly flat until the last pull up to the bivvy spot, dinner at a pub, amazing night under the stars, early morning artisinal coffe, ride home fully satisfied The next Sunday Service will be decided on the day due to the weather forecast, it looks like heavy rain so if we do ride it’ll be into the city for an urban exploration, meeting at 8am at Riverbank for coffee
