Annual gathering…

On September 11, 2021 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

Its 640am on Saturday morning and I’m nervous and excited in equal measures, the sky is getting lighter by the minute and the train is approaching, I push my bike on board and strap it in, there's no one else in the carriage but I still wear my mask. I’m heading to North Wales to …

Three out of five ain’t bad…

On August 30, 2021 By grassupthemiddleLeave a comment

The Peak Audax Wednesday Marple grimpeur series features five rides around thePeak District. At 100km each, these sit on the shorter side of all things audax. Don’t let that fool you though. Each ride carries at least two AAA points, signifying a minimum of 2000m climbing. This year I hoped to ride the full series, …

Mid Winter Alpine Gravel Adventure 2021…

This particular trip had been on my mind for a few years on and off. As with most of my trips it all started with a late night session pouring over a NZ Topo50 Map (think Ordnance Survey Maps) These days this is very much a digital exploration, with paper maps primarily saved for getting beta on some …

A Fool’s Spring..?

On March 1, 2021 By grassupthemiddle1 Comment

That term, a fools spring, has recently come to my attention. I’d never heard of it until fairly recently and of course, it was the internet that provided it... I’m not convinced, however if nothing else it serves as a nice title for this blog post... After a dreary Winter the emergence of blue skies …

“In my day we just had a bike…”

I've always loved bikes as long as I can remember.  I grew up with the '90s Mountain bike craze.  Rigid steel frames, cantilever brakes, shorts and a hoody. Riding the miles out of Hull to bomb around the tail end of the Yorkshire Wolds in the mud, then ride back. Perfect... After a while things …

Bikebirding in the South Lakes…

On January 2, 2021 By grassupthemiddle2 Comments

During the ‘unprecedented’ times of this past year not only did I rediscover a real passion for getting out on my bike and making the most of that lunch hour freedom whilst working from home, but also picking up the binoculars and scouring the trees, hedges, and waterways that I could ride out to for …

Riders on the storm…

On December 29, 2020 By grassupthemiddleLeave a comment

Summer holidays… wide-open beaches… beating sun… ice cream… factor 50. I didn’t get any of this, but that’s what you get for bike touring in September. Over the last few years I’ve been on some sort of cycling holiday with my dad, it’s become something of a Dibble tradition. After the lockdown and the closing …

The Clough Stuff…

On December 20, 2020December 22, 2020 By grassupthemiddle2 Comments

Being of the disposition to be constantly scouring over maps, mostly of my local area, in the constant hunt for new roads, lanes, tracks and bridleways to ride, inevitably one finds that the original boundaries one holds become more and more relaxed in relation to what can be defined as rideable.   Having ridden pretty much …

Muddy Lane Connoisseur… (revisited)

On December 14, 2020 By grassupthemiddle4 Comments

It feels as if we are suffering from some particularly depressing Manchester weather this winter, so much so that the enthusiasm to ride bicycles evaporates as soon the early morning alarm clock rings. It’s probably (almost certainly) a normal winter, but a combination of a Manchester winter topping off a year that’s been dominated by the …

Swapping an E out for an A…

On November 1, 2020November 17, 2020 By grassupthemiddle5 Comments

Paddling Not Pedalling... After a recent post of mine on Instagram, Steve Makin asked if I'd write an account of last week's 'Ocean Adventure Camp' overnighter. Parking the cycle's up for a few days, Wifey & I opted to take the days between our Labour weekend and (our district) Marlborough Anniversary Day off for some …

Our #gutmspringforward23 bivvy weekend has just taken place, there was a good turnout and the weather was mostly kind, unfortunately I managed to pick up yet another chest infection so couldn’t make it so I’ll be intrigued to read about it in a forthcoming blog post coming soon There’s a new post up on the blog, some excellent writing and snapping about some fun winter riding from our pal @singlespeedsimon Bicycle rides are always enhanced by either a train or boat journey somewhere along the way, boats are best but trains run a close second twenty five miles into 25mph headwinds equals a beer on a bench with a sea view @farmyardbrewco ground conditions wet, forecast wet, bring mudguards Last reminder that if you are coming along to the #GUTMspringforward23 bivvy please let us know so we can book dinner for the evening, we’ll be eating at a country pub that gets busy on a Saturday night The forecast is looking good for this coming Sunday, so it maybe a good day for a fully loaded shakedown ride in preparation for the #GUTMspringforward23 bivvy ? Meeting at 830am @Riverbankcoffee for a ride out to Rostherne Church across the cheshire tundra, a sociable thirty miles or so, all welcome #GUTMspringforward23 bivvy details, meeting at the Riverbank Cafe at 1030 and riding by 11ish, sociable pace and mostly flat until the last pull up to the bivvy spot, dinner at a pub, amazing night under the stars, early morning artisinal coffe, ride home fully satisfied The next Sunday Service will be decided on the day due to the weather forecast, it looks like heavy rain so if we do ride it’ll be into the city for an urban exploration, meeting at 8am at Riverbank for coffee
